Be more adventurous: join the 30-day challenge

Inspired by this month’s ‘Embrace Adventure’ dossier with lastminute.com, the Psychologies team decided we needed to practise what we preach, shake up our own routines and inject a little excitement into our everyday lives. And we are inviting you to join us by taking up our 30 Days of Adventure challenge with us – have an adventure every day for a month no matter how big or small, from sleeping on the opposite side of the bed to taking swing dance lessons to packing your suitcase for a spontaneous spa weekend, and see how it makes you feel.

Why? Because, day in, day out, we tend to follow the routine we construct for ourselves, and although that routine may be necessary, we can often become stuck to it, eating the same food, sitting in the same spot, taking the same route to work; losing all sense of spontaneity and novelty. As editor Suzy Greaves says in this month’s editor’s letter, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun to do something differently, shake things up, challenge yourself? Adventures make us grow and laugh and learn about the world and ourselves. Go on an adventure and the landscape changes on the inside as well as the outside.’ Adventure is a pathway to see the world around you and yourself in a new way.

We’ll be blogging about our adventures everyday for 30 days from the 25 July to 29 August on Life Labs. You’re welcome to join us then, or set your own 30 days, the only rule is to do something adventurous everyday no matter how small it might seem. Keep a diary and see how the novelty and excitement adventure brings makes you feel, as we plan to through blogging, or simply notice it’s affect on you after a month. We guarantee you won’t regret it.

How to be more adventurous

  • Wake up early and go for a walk around your neighbourhood just after dawn
  • Wear a colour you never usually wear
  • Play travel roulette and take a spontaneous weekend city break anywhere.
  • Watch a film you don't think you would enjoy
  • Take your kids to experience something they have never eaten or done before and relive the memory through them
  • Visit somewhere or something in your neighbourhood you have always seen and thought you'd like to go to
