Being sarcastic are we?

How is it that sometimes when you send a text or email that you meant to be sarcastic it doesn't come across like that to the recipient?

Being sarcastic are we?

A sarcastic line delivered with a cheeky smile in person usually goes down with a laugh (or a joking punch on the arm).

But when we try to be tongue in cheek with words over email or text, we can sometimes land ourselves in trouble.

We might choose an emoji to prop up our jolly quip, but researchers doing work on sarcasm and emoticons have now found that a simple winky face, as opposed to a tongue-out face, exclamation mark, full stop or ellipsis (…) is the most effective way to make sure your message is read with sarcasm.
