What to do if you’re stuck in a job you hate!

Try these 3 quick steps to kick start some potential positive changes for 2019.

Are you feeling any of the below? Here I share my story, to help encourage you to be in control of the choices you make.

  • That sinking feeling on a Sunday night.
  • Anxiety when you think about your job?
  • Boredom at work.
  • Knowing that there is a role/career which is bigger and better out there waiting for you.
  • Overwhelmed and stressed at work.
  • Disengaged at home?

I’d just pulled up at the doctor’s surgery when I got the call from my boss that I’d been waiting for all morning.

“I’m sorry to have to confirm that you’ve been selected for redundancy and your mobile phone and access to emails will be switched off at 5pm today.”

It felt brutal!

I’m not sure the poor doctor quite knew what to do when I walked into the surgery with tears running down my face.

I was absolutely devastated, and mainly cried my way through that afternoon and evening until I finally went to bed exhausted.

(Funny really as I didn’t actually enjoy my job and found it stressful and overwhelming most of the time).

It somehow feels very different when that choice is taken away from you and you suddenly value what you had.

But do you know what? The next day was a new day, and I woke up full of possibility. The sun was shining (which always helps) and I decided to start contacting recruitment agencies as I felt under massive time pressure to get a new job.

After a lot of soul searching (and with the agreement from my partner) I decided to take a job share – which meant less money, but more flexibility and time with my daughter.

This was the best decision I could have made, and that year ended up being a great year! We cut our cloth and I came home happy and was a much nicer mum and partner to be around.

I hadn’t been happy in my previous job for such a long time but had been too scared to do anything about it!

Research published this year by employee benefits provider Personal Group shows that 56% of all people surveyed were not happy in the workplace.

So why am I sharing my story?

In case you’re feeling like you hate your job and you’re afraid of the thought of change, then I want you to know that you do have a choice! Make that choice whilst you have control of it. Since then, I’ve always made sure I’ve been in control of my career decisions and haven’t looked back!

Life is too precious and the time to really take that leap of faith is whilst you’re secure in a job!

I’ve helped women get that promotion, find their dream job, start their own business, or just build up the courage to make a plan for the next step in their career.

So, if you’re going back to a job in 2019 that doesn’t excite you, then isn’t it worth spending some time thinking about how you can start to change that?

3 Quick Steps to Kick Start Potential Positive Changes

  • Make a list of all the things you hate about your job

Consider if it is your job that’s making you unhappy or how you’re actually approaching it – this will help you gain clarity on whether it’s the right thing for you now.

  • List your top career goals over the next 5 years

What do you want to achieve? What’s important to you? Is it flexibility, financial goals or the type of work you’ll do?

  • Brainstorm all the things you’re passionate about

This should help you to really focus on what makes you feel alive and drives you from your core.

You only have one life to live so ask yourself “are you really living it?”
